Manhattan Chinatown, New York City

The majority of these groups in Manhattan Chinatown are small apartment or “storefront” congregations, mostly speaking Cantonese or Mandarin or Taishanese, without any activities in English. Perhaps the largest of these (about the size of an average Christian church) is the Mahayana Temple on Canal at Bowery Street, open for tours daily.
Tzu Chi is a Buddhist charity with many missions including Food Pantry for the needy, Mobile Health Clinic for the Underprivileged, Disaster Relief, Humanitarian Chinese School, and so forth.

Branch of Fo Guang Shan Monastery - International Buddhist Progress Society headquartered in Taiwan and founded by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, the Fo Guang Shan New York center offers many activities, including summer camp, flower arrangement, Chinese school, traditional medicine, Chinese musical instruments, and more. Members also can use the Fo Guang Shan Deer Park Retreat Center, a rural facility about an hour to two outside of NYC.

Founded in 1979 by the late Venerable Master Sheng Yen, the Dharma Drum New York branch Chan Meditation Center in Elmhurst and Dharma Drum Retreat Center, its large rural retreat facility about 90 minutes away from NYC in Pine Bush NY, offer activities in both English and in Chinese. Zen meditation classes and group sits and practices are frequently bilingual. Children’s summer camp and other events are also held regularly.

Tzu Chi, now a global Buddhist charitable organization, was founded in 1969 by Venerable Master Cheng Yen, a Buddhist nun in Taiwan, and a small group of female supporters. With its worldwide growth, Tzu Chi USA was founded in 1989. Tzu Chi New York offers many activities, mostly in Chinese but some in English, including mobile health, vision, and dental services for the indigent, food pantry for the needy, Chinatown community center, a humanitarian Chinese school for children and teenagers, disaster relief outreach, and other compassionate efforts.

The Buddhist Association of the United States was founded in 1964, with the urban Temple of Enlightenment opening in 1966. The much larger Chuang Yen Monastery opened in 1981 and is now the home of most of the resident monastics in this organization. A small English meditation group meets regularly at the Bronx temple.
