NEW - NOW OPEN! Great Dharma Chan Monastery - Chung Tai Zen Center of Boulder 普法禪寺
6417 S Boulder Rd, Boulder CO 80303
The Chung Tai Zen Center of Boulder is a 20,000 square foot ecologically friendly building with a separate monastic residence, situated on a quiet 35 acre piece of land, approved in 2019 with construction started in 2020 and completed at end of 2021 / beginning of 2022. Activities included structured guided Zen meditation classes in English and in Chinese, sutra study groups, youth activities, Buddhist ceremonies, and meditation retreats. The center was left unscathed luckily after a major brush wildfire in Boulder prior to its opening. Having monastics and maintaining Asian Buddhist traditions with modern American Zen classes is fairly rare of an opportunity - Great Dharma Chan Monastery (in Chinese, Pu Fa Temple) is quite an accomplishment!

Other Asian temples: There are many other Asian Buddhist temples in the Denver area, of almost every ethnicity. Here’s an example of one with meditation sessions and talks in English:

Other Asian Buddhist temples:
Japanese-American:
Hawaii has perhaps the largest concentration of Japanese-American Buddhist temples in the United States. The largest one, Byodo-In, is an impressive though smaller-scale replica of a famous Buddhist temple in Uji, Kyoto, Japan that was built over a thousand years ago. Today, it is a must-see site while in Oahu, though the temple is largely non-functional from a religious perspective (no regular services held) and more of a tourist attraction and special events hall. Another must-see is the giant Amida Buddha statue at the Lahaina Jodo Mission, a Japanese-American Buddhist temple in Maui founded in 1912. It’s free to roam the serene courtyard, located literally on the sandy beach. Supposedly the largest Japanese-style Buddha statue outside of Japan, it was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first official Japanese immigrants to Hawaii, who arrived in 1868. The Paia Mantokuji, a Soto Zen temple founded in 1906 on the island of Maui, has even survived a tsunami, though shoreline erosion is currently threatening this beautiful Japanese temple. Many Japanese temples did not survive the unfortunate internment of Japanese-American citizens during World War II, and the defunct Hana Buddhist Temple near the end of the Road to Hana in Maui is a reminder of the fragile history of diversity in this country.

There are also several other different Asian ethnic Buddhist temples (Burmese, Thai, Korean, etc), mostly on Oahu. Here’s just a few:

Mu-Ryang-Sa Buddhist Temple (Korean)
2408 Halelaau Place, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii 96816
This large Korean monastery, also known as “Broken Ridge Buddhist Temple” due to its distinctive broken roof appearance (to comply with local building codes), has occasional meditation groups in English.

Tzu Chi’s Louisiana chapter operates out of a residence, but Tzu Chi USA raised over $10 million in donations for Hurricane Katrina victims, and Tzu Chi Buddhist Foundation consistently donates cash cards to locals in need after storms and disasters, in addition to blankets, food, and supplies. They don’t seem to mind that 99% of aid recipients are not Buddhist, and in fact, oftentimes even help rebuild Christian churches, as giving love without expectation is a theme of Tzu Chi. This branch reports to the Tzu Chi Houston regional headquarters.

Officially established in 1994, Mid America Buddhist Association is the largest Buddhist center in the Midwestern United States. Located on 76 acres of serene rural land about an hour west of St Louis, the tranquil buildings on the complex have been gradually constructed over the years with a modern, eco-friendly design, and include meditation retreat facilities, dormitories, and kitchen. A large memorial complex (Dizang Hall) provides a respectful resting place for urns and ashes of the deceased. Events such as residential Zen meditation retreats are held in both English and in Chinese, and attract people not just from around Missouri, but from all over the country and world.

The US Zen Institute was established in 1988 in an 85 year old church which later burned down and was rebuilt in 2001 as a two-story temple with a more Chinese architecture style. Located in a residential neighborhood of suburban Washington DC next to the Germantown MARC light rail station closer to newer Asian areas of Maryland such as Rockville and Gaithersburg, USZI is the largest Chinese Buddhist temple in the DC area. It is nonsectarian and does not identify exclusively with any particular Buddhist tradition. An 11-acre rural retreat center nearby, given the name Amatavihara Meditation Retreat Center, opened in 2022 after construction started in 2020. Most events are in Chinese, though some are in English and all are welcome, and a Vietnamese contingent often participates in mindful chanting retreats. An annual youth summer camp and acupuncture are among some of the other activities offered.

Avatamsaka Vihara Buddhist Monastery 華嚴精舍
(Dharma Realm Buddhist Association)
9601 Seven Locks Road, Bethesda MD 20817
http://www.avatamsakavihara.org

Avatamsaka Vihara was established in 1990 by Venerable Master Hsuan Hua as part of the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association based at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in California. He had visited DC in 1989 as part of the inauguration of President George Bush, and Chinese-American followers were inspired to start a Buddhist practice center. The first house was in Potomac; the current temple location in Bethesda was a former USPS Post Office and inaugurated in 2003. Several nuns lead the congregation; the cultivation is rigorous and precepts are strictly followed. Activities include chanting ceremonies, listening to the Venerable’s recorded lectures, vegetarian lunch, and a Sunday school for children.

Founded in 2004 as part of the Fo Guang Shan order of Humanistic Buddhism headquartered in Taiwan, BLIA DC initially used various locations, typically in suburbs with high Asian populations such as Montgomery County, often using schools in Rockville or places such as the Taiwanese Culture Center at 901 Wind River Lane, Gaitherburg MD 20878. In 2020, a small physical home in a Gaithersburg office building was established. Activities such as vegetarian cooking classes, flower arrangement, calligraphy, and more, are largely in Chinese. Monks and nuns from various Fo Guang Shan branches, including New York and North Carolina, will come for larger events.

Temple of Cun Yum 觀音堂
805 6th St NW, Washington DC 20001

This small older “temple” in the heart of DC’s Chinatown on H street next to the NBA basketball arena and Gallery Place Chinatown Station has a very small altar room with Guan Yin Bodhisattva and other Buddha statues on the ground floor, but this tiny shrine hall can barely fit a dozen people. There are no resident monastics, and only occasional chanting services, but it is open most days for incense and self-guided prayer. Its future is uncertain given that the rest of Washington DC Chinatown has largely gentrified and very few Chinese or Asian-Americans live in the area anymore. (The name is a Cantonese translation of Guan Yin.)
