The Fo Guang Shan order in Central Florida began in 1992 with a small group of disciples who gathered to chant sutras and discuss Buddhist teachings regularly. Local Taiwanese and Chinese American families soon felt a need for a temple, and after donation of a piece of land near the airport, a majestic 3-story temple with an ornate traditional roof opened to great fanfare in 2007. Today, Fo Guang Shan Guang Ming Temple hosts regular activities in English, Spanish, and Chinese, including meditation groups, yoga classes, weekend Mandarin language and Chinese school, children’s camps, vegetarian festivals, and more. Hundreds come out for major holidays such as Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, Lunar New Year, and Buddha’s Birthday Vesak Celebrations. In addition, a memorial pagoda in the rear holds the urns and ashes of the deceased.

This is the Dharma Drum Mountain Buddhist Association group in the panhandle of Florida. Started in 2009 by Guo Gu (Professor Jimmy Yu of Florida State University), a former attendant of Venerable Master Sheng Yen (founder of Dharma Drum Mountain Buddhist Association), the group moved to its own building at its current location in 2017. Most activities are in English; in fact, there are relatively few Chinese speakers and most attendees are not Asians. The meditation sessions and retreats attract a diverse audience, and residential Zen retreats are now held here regularly.

Tallahassee Chan Center led several community activities (some in conjunction with FSU) dedicated to countering racism and supporting social justice in the wake of the Black Live Matters movement, and also was the founding organization and leader of Dharma Relief, a Buddhist nonprofit that raised hundred of thousands of dollars for Covid PPE supplies donated to hospitals and nursing homes across the country!

The Atlanta branch of Chung Tai Chan Monastery, Dharma Jewel Monastery opened in 2009 under the direction of Grand Master Wei Chueh. The facility was previously a Korean Christian church with a main hall on the ground level and small classrooms in the basement; an expansion completed in 2017 brought a kitchen and dining hall to the temple. Our observation is that Dharma Jewel Monastery attracts a diverse crowd including Caucasians, African-Americans, Latinos, and Asian-Americans. This is through bilingual ceremonies, as well as several regular meditation classes in English, as well as children and family meditation courses.

In 1998, Venerable Hsing Yin’s disciples formed a Buddhist study group in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill), bringing together Taiwanese and Chinese-Americans to create the Fo Guang Shan chapter in North Carolina. The temple building opened in 2010 as an impressive new-build with unique architectural features including environmentally-friendly design, rustic wooden logs that nestle the building well in the tree-lined neighborhood facade, and large glass walls allowing ample natural light, especially in the dining hall and bookstore. It is perhaps unlike any other Buddhist temple in the United States.
